Large cervical branchial cyst in a young adult: case description and treatment

Resumo Introdução
Branchial cyst is a congenital anomalies of branchial apparatus development, most commonly located in the cervical region. Classically, branchial cyst presents as a mass at the anterior border of the sternocleidomastoid muscle, at the junction of its upper and middle third. It is typically diagnosed during childhood or adolescence, although presentation in adulthood is possible. This paper describes the case of a 25-year-old man from Guinea-Bissau diagnosed with a 5 cm branchial cyst.
Resumo Métodos
Poster presentation of a 25-year-old patient with no relevant medical history, born in Guinea-Bissau, diagnosed with a voluminous branchial cyst and submitted to surgical excision. The patient was referred for excision of a branchial cyst under neuromonitoring of the recurrent laryngeal nerve.
Resumo Resultados
The surgical intervention was performed successfully, on an outpatient basis, with no immediate complications. Histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of a branchial cyst. No signs of infection or post-operative complications were observed.

Although uncommon in adults, branchial cysts may present at any age. Diagnosis is typically established through imaging, with histological examination providing definitive confirmation. Surgical excision remains the treatment of choice, as it ensures complete removal and prevents recurrence. This case is noteworthy due to the patient?s age at diagnosis and the considerable size of the lesion.
